Last year we ran a series on “Zero- Carb Dangers,” which are health problems that can appear if carb intake – or carb+protein intake, since protein can to some degree make up for a deficit of glucose – are too low. Anthony Colpo has recently argued that hypothyroidism should be added to the list of potential zero- carb dangers; and that low- carb high- fat diets in general might create a risk of hypothyroidism. Similar arguments have been made by Matt Stone and others. Our resident thyroid expert, Mario Renato Iwakura, decided to look more deeply into the matter. What does the literature say? Here’s Mario. There have been anedoctal reports on low carb forums about people becoming hypothyroid after following a low carb, high fat diet. Anthony Colpo recently wrote a blog post about carbohydrate, fat and protein intake and their effects on thyroid hormone levels, concluding that a high fat or high protein diet is detrimental and that a high carbohydrate diet is good for the thyroid . There is no evidence that a diet, such as the Perfect Health Diet, that is high in saturated and monounsaturated fat, low in PUFA, and provides sufficient, moderate levels of protein and carbohydrate, has any detrimental effect on the thyroid. On the contrary, I believe that such a diet is optimal for thyroid health. What Has Been Tested: High PUFA Diets. Colpo’s post is extensive and covered most, but not all, relevant studies published to date about the subject. Many of those studies have problems like short duration or calorie restriction. But in almost all, with the exception of one study by Jeff Volek and collaborators . An example is the Vermont long term study .
The excess fat in these diets averaged 8. So, this diet’s fat was probably 1. Or in Ullrich et al 1. All diets were in liquid form, and fat was predominantly PUFA. The composition of the four diets was: 5. P/1. 0C5. 0P/7. 6C7. P/1. 0C7. 0P/8. 6CEnergy (kcal)5. ![]() Protein (% cal)3. Fat (% cal)5. 7. 8. Carb (% cal)6. 7. Thyroid- stimulating hormone (TSH) declined equally after both diets”In the Vermont study . When subjects on the low- carb diet began eating the higher- carb mixed weight gain diet, their T3 levels rose. T3 levels among those who went from the high- carb maintenance diet to the mixed diet remained unchanged. In contrast to T3, serum concentrations of T4 were unchanged by overeating or changes in dietary composition.” . Neither do we have studies showing what happen to T3 levels after a high saturated/monosaturated fat diet is eaten. We will have to rely on indirect evidence. Indirect Evidence: Calories Required to Maintain Weight. There is a connection between thyroid activity and obesity. Reduced thyroid activity reduces energy expenditure (“calories out”) and promotes weight gain; normal thyroid function tends to promote normal weight. So we can use the vast number of obesity studies as indirect evidence for the effects of different types of diet on the thyroid. Anthony emphasized this relationship in his post, noting findings of the Vermont study on overfeeding: “Again, that both groups gained weight should come as no surprise. However, the group overfed the mixed diet required more calories (2,6. Baseline differences in metabolism between the two groups were ruled out, as there was no difference in total calories required to maintain initial lean weights.”So the high- PUFA diet promoted weight gain: it caused excess weight to be retained at a lower calorie intake. This is consistent with reduced thyroid activity. Is this effect due to a high- fat diet generally, or to high- PUFA diets only? Some insight into this question may be found in a blog post by Stephan Guyenet . Rats fed isocaloric diets in which the fat source was varied among three groups – a beef tallow group (primarily saturated fat, 3% PUFA), an olive oil group (primarily unsaturated, 1. PUFA), and a safflower oil group (7. ![]() ![]() ![]() PUFA) – had highly variable weight gains. The olive oil group gained 7. Here is the data, expressed in terms of the percentage of baseline calorie intake that the men had to eat to maintain their weight: The high- fat diet consisted largely of butter and cream; the high- carbohydrate diet of extra sugar. When eating the butter and cream, subjects had to eat more calories to maintain weight than when eating the sugary diet – 2. Every subject had to increase calories when eating high- fat. This suggests higher thyroid hormone levels on the high- saturated fat diet than on a high- carb diet. The Volek Study. Anthony cited a study by Jeff Volek and others . There was a significant increase in total T4 (+1. T3 nor r. T3. They instead tested T3 uptake, an indirect measure of thyroxine binding globulin (TBG) in the blood, which tells us little of any real value about changes in actual thyroid hormone levels. The researchers also measured IGF- 1, glucagon, total and free testosterone, sex hormone- binding globulin (SHBG), insulin- like growth factor- I (IGF- I), and cortisol. The only significant change noted was a reduction in insulin following the low- carbohydrate diet. The Volek study is very interesting because it was not calorie restricted (only carbohydrate was restricted) and was done in normal- weight man. The amount of polyunsaturated fat increased a little (from 6 to 1. Although he did not directly measured T3 nor r. T3 we have indirect evidence that they were not impaired. One very well known fact is that hypothyroid patients, even when taking T4 hormones, usually struggle to lose fat. This occurs because, when thyroid hormones are low, especially when T3 (triidothyronine) is low . If the LCHF diet was impairing the thyroid these healthy normal weight men, who had been advised to eat enough calories to maintain their weight during the intervention, should have struggled to lose fat mass. In fact they lost 3. The control group did not lose any weight despite an 1. More, testosterone levels usually decrease when thyroid hormones are low . IGF- 1 levels are also decreased in hypothyroidism . Glucagon levels are higher in hypothyroid patients . Sex hormone- binding globulin (SHBG) is low in hypothyroidism . But none of these parameters changed during the LCHF diet. So this diet which was low in carb (8% of calories) and moderately high in protein (3. PUFA (1. 1%) does not seems to affect the thyroid if saturated and monosaturated fat (5. Let’s compare the fatty acid profile of the Volek diet with that of human milk: Saturated. Monounsaturated. Polyunsaturated. Volek diet. 41%4. Human milk. 47. 5%4. Not too much difference. Perhaps PUFA intake needs to be higher than 1. Effects of high fat and thyroid responses to cold. In 1. 94. 5, Mitchell et al published two articles comparing the effects of proteins versus carbohydrates and fat versus carbohydrate on man’s tolerance to cold exposure . Carbohydrate does better than protein, but worse than fat, at maintaining internal temperature as measured by rectal temperature. On the first experiment, five men consumed a high protein diet (4. P, 4. 0% F, 1. 9% C) and five a high carbohydrate diet (1. P, 4. 1% F, 4. 8% C) for 5. Food intake was adjusted to mantain a constant body weight. The effect of decrement in rectal and mean skin temperature during eight hour exposure to cold with light clothing: Rectal Temp. Skin Temp. High Protein. High Carb. 1. 0. 53. Significance. P=0. P=0. 0. 09. 6On the second experiment, five men consumed a high fat diet (1. P, 7. 3% F, 1. 7% C) and five a high carbohydrate diet (1. P, 2. 3% F, 6. 7% C) for 5. Food intake was adjusted to maintain a constant body weight. The excess fat of the high fat group was provided by butter and cream. Decrement in rectal temperature from the first two hour to the last two hours of 6 hours exposures to - 2. Eating a high carb meal between the intervention did not produced any alteration. But, eating a high fat meal cut the decrement in rectal temperature in half. Thyroid hormones are responsible for basal metabolic rate and heat production. So, if a high saturated fat diet maintains body temperature better than a high carbohydrate diet when the body is subjected to cold, it would seem fair to assume that the thyroid functions better on this high saturated fat diet. Conclusion. A diet with sufficient but not excess protein, moderate carbohydrate comprising a minority of calories, and high intake of saturated and monounsaturated fat but low intake of polyunsaturated fat would seem to be optimal for thyroid function. Carpet sharks are sharks classified in the order. Orectolobiformes. Sometimes the common name . Carpet sharks have five gill slits, two spineless dorsal fins, and a small mouth that does not extend past the eyes. Many species have barbels. Characteristics. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Jurassic; the oldest known orectolobiform genera are Folipistrix (known from Toarcian to Aalenian of Belgium and Germany), Palaeobrachaelurus (Aalenian to Barremian) and Annea (Toarcian to Bajocian of Europe). Besides the nostrils are barbels, tactile sensory organs, and grooves known as nasoral grooves connect the nostrils to the mouth. Five short gill slits are just in front of the origin of the pectoral fin and the fifth slit tends to overlap the fourth one. The only exception to this rule is the whale shark, the spiracles of which are situated just behind the eyes. The patterning provides camouflage when the fish is lying on the seabed. It is the largest species of fish, but despite its size, is not dangerous, as it is a filter feeder, drawing in water through its wide mouth and sifting out the plankton. The smallest carpet shark, at up to about 3. Cirrhoscyllium expolitum). Nurse sharks and whale sharks have a fringe of barbels on their snouts, and barbelthroat carpet sharks (Cirrhoscyllium expolitum) have barbels dangling from their throat regions. One has been observed swallowing a bamboo shark whole. Some species are oviparous and lay eggs which may be liberated directly into the water or may be enclosed in horny egg cases. Some female sharks have been observed to push egg cases into crevices and this would be an added protection for the developing embryos. Other species are ovoviviparous and the fertilised eggs are retained in the mother's oviduct. There, the developing embryos, which are usually few in number, feed on their yolk sacs at first and later hatch out and feed on nutrients secreted by the walls of the oviduct. The young are born in an advanced state, ready to live independent lives. They are most common in the western Indo- Pacific region and are usually found in relatively deep water. They have two dorsal fins, placed close together on the back, and a relatively short tail. Blind sharks feed on small fish, cuttlefish, sea anemones, and crustaceans. The female retains the eggs in her body until they hatch (ovoviviparity), during which time the embryos feed solely on the egg yolk. Also present on the lower jaw are two fleshy barbels, chemosensory organs which help the nurse sharks find prey hidden in the sediments. Common in shallow, tropical, and subtropical waters, these sharks are sluggish and docile bottom- dwellers. Nurse sharks typically attack humans only if directly threatened. The largest species can reach a length of 4. They have elongated, cylindrical bodies, with short barbels and large spiracles. As their common name suggests, they have unusually long tails, exceeding the length of the rest of their bodies. They are found in shallow waters of the tropical Indo- Pacific. They are sluggish fish, feeding on bottom- dwelling invertebrates and smaller fish. The camouflage is improved by the presence of small weed- like whisker lobes surrounding the jaw, which help to camouflage it and act as sensory barbs. They are found in shallow temperate and tropical waters of the western Pacific Ocean and eastern Indian Ocean, chiefly around Australia and Indonesia. Most species have a maximum length of 1. Wobbegongs are generally not dangerous to humans unless provoked. They are found only in the shallow waters of the western Pacific. They are relatively small sharks, with the largest species reaching no more than 9. It is a slow- moving filter feeder with a very large mouth, feeding mainly, though not exclusively, on plankton. The whale shark is a pelagic species, living in the open sea in tropical and warm oceans with a lifespan around 7. They grow to a length of 2. Indo- Pacific, frequenting coral reefs and sandy flats to a depth of 6. They are nocturnal and spend most of the day resting motionless on the sea floor. They are innocuous to humans. The IUCN has assessed them as vulnerable and some evidence indicates their numbers are dwindling. Allen & Erdmann, 2. Allen, Erdmann & Dudgeon, 2. Allen & Erdmann, 2. Allen & Dudgeon, 2. Rapid weight loss is often difficult to sustain, particularly if you lose the weight through extreme calorie restriction. The body will rebel at the low calories levels and it becomes difficult to make it through the day without binging on unhealthy foods. Exercise speeds up weight loss, and the body doesn't generally rebel against exercise the way that it does against fewer calories. Access to a treadmill allows you to lose weight fast without severely restricting calories. Start with an easy workout. T3 is one of the two major hormones released from the thyroid. It is also the more important one because it is more potent than T4. Therefore, T3 level is crucial to. Bodybuilding.com Foundation Series L-Carnitine Promotes Fat Loss By Encouraging The Conversion Of Fatty Acids Into Fuel! Get the Lowest Price on L-Carnitine at. Carnitine is a substance that helps the body turn fat into energy. Your body makes it in the liver and kidneys and stores it in the skeletal muscles, heart, brain. Some people, however, may not have enough carnitine because their bodies cannot make enough or cannot transport it into tissues so it can be used. Other conditions, such as angina or intermittent claudication, can also cause low levels of carnitine in the body, as can some medications. Carnitine has been proposed as a treatment for many conditions because it acts as an antioxidant. Antioxidants fight harmful particles in the body known as free radicals, which damage cells and tamper with DNA. Supplements and energy drinks that contain l-carnitine claim to be metabolism boosters that can help you shed weight and increase your athletic performance. ![]() Antioxidants can neutralize free radicals and may reduce or help prevent some of the damage they cause. Carnitine may help treat are certain conditions. Serious diseases require conventional medical treatment, and you should talk to your health care provider before taking carnitine. For other conditions, such as fatigue or improving athletic performance, carnitine seems safe but may not help much. Heart Conditions. Angina. Research suggests that carnitine can be used along with conventional treatment for stable angina. Several clinical trials show that L- carnitine and propionyl- L- carnitine can help reduce symptoms of angina and improve the ability of people with angina to exercise without chest pain. DO NOT self treat chest pain with carnitine, however. See your health care provider for diagnosis and conventional treatment, and take carnitine only under your provider's supervision. Heart attack. A few studies suggest that carnitine may help when used with conventional medicines after a heart attack, but not all studies agree. Some small studies suggest that people who take L- carnitine supplements soon after a heart attack may be less likely to have another heart attack, die of heart disease, have chest pain and abnormal heart rhythms, or develop heart failure. However, other studies show no benefit. Treatment with oral carnitine may also improve muscle weakness. Carnitine should be used along with conventional medication under your provider's supervision. Heart failure. A few small studies have suggested that carnitine (usually propionyl- L- carnitine) can help reduce symptoms of heart failure and improve exercise capacity in people with heart failure. However, more research is needed. Peripheral Vascular Disease. ![]()
Reduced blood flow to the legs from atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries, where plaque builds up in the arteries, often causes an aching or cramping pain in the legs while walking or exercising. This pain is called intermittent claudication, and the reduced blood flow to the legs is called peripheral vascular disease (PVD). Several studies show that carnitine can help reduce symptoms and improve mobility among people with intermittent claudication. Most studies have used propionyl- L- carnitine. Scientists do not know whether L- carnitine would work the same. Diabetic Neuropathy. Diabetic neuropathy happens when high blood sugar levels damage nerves in the body, especially the arms, legs, and feet, causing pain and numbness. Preliminary studies suggest acetyl- L- carnitine may help reduce pain and increase feeling in affected nerves. It is also possible that carnitine can help nerves regenerate. More research is needed. Exercise Performance. Although carnitine is often taken to boost exercise performance, more research is needed. Weight Loss. Although L- carnitine has been marketed as a weight loss supplement, scientific evidence is lacking. Some studies show that oral carnitine may help reduce fat mass, increase muscle mass, and reduce fatigue, which may contribute to weight loss in some people. Alzheimer Disease and Memory Impairment. Evidence is mixed as to whether carnitine is useful in treating Alzheimer disease. Several early studies showed that acetyl- L- carnitine, might help slow down the progression of Alzheimer disease, relieve depression related to senility and other forms of dementia, and improve memory in the elderly. But larger and better- designed studies found it did not help at all. People should take carnitine for Alzheimer disease and other forms of dementia only under the supervision of their provider. Kidney Disease and Dialysis. Because the kidneys make carnitine, kidney disease could lead to low levels of carnitine in the body. If you have kidney disease, your provider may prescribe carnitine. DO NOT take carnitine without medical supervision. Male Infertility. Low sperm counts have been linked to low carnitine levels in men. Several studies suggest that L- carnitine supplements may increase sperm count and motility. Erectile Dysfunction. N-Acetyl Carnitine Review, Side Effects and Benefits. In another study, a combination of propionyl- L- carnitine and acetyl- L- carnitine improved the effectiveness of Viagra in men who had erectile dysfunction after prostate surgery. More studies are needed. Peyronie Disease. Peyronie disease is characterized by a curvature of the penis that leads to pain during an erection. One promising study compared acetyl- L- carnitine to the medication tamoxifen in 4. Acetyl- L- carnitine worked better than tamoxifen at reducing pain during sex and reducing the curve of the penis. Acetyl- L- carnitine also had fewer side effects than tamoxifen. More research is needed. Hyperthyroidism. Some research suggests that L- carnitine may help prevent or reduce symptoms of an overactive thyroid, such as insomnia, nervousness, heart palpitations, and tremors. In fact, in one study, a small group of people with hyperthyroidism saw these symptoms improve, and their body temperature become normal, when taking carnitine. But a larger, better- designed clinical trial is needed to see if carnitine really works. In addition, researchers think carnitine may work by blocking the action of thyroid hormone, which could be dangerous for people with low thyroid levels. DO NOT take carnitine for hyperthyroidism without your doctor's supervision. Dietary Sources. Red meat (particularly lamb) and dairy products are the main food sources of carnitine. It can also be found in fish, poultry, tempeh, wheat, asparagus, avocados, and peanut butter. Available Forms. Carnitine is available as a supplement in a variety of forms, such as: L- carnitine: the most widely available and least expensive. Acetyl- L- carnitine: Often used in studies for Alzheimer disease and other brain disorders. Propionyl- L- carnitine: Often used in studies for heart disease and peripheral vascular disease Avoid D- carnitine supplements. They interfere with the natural form of L- carnitine and may produce unwanted side effects. In some cases, L- carnitine may be taken by prescription or given intravenously by a health care provider. How to Take It. Pediatric. DO NOT give carnitine supplements to a child without your child's health care provider's supervision. Your child's provider should first make sure that the child has a carnitine deficiency. Adult. Recommended doses of L- carnitine vary depending on the health condition being treated. The usual dose is between 1 to 3 g per day. Precautions. Because supplements may have side effects or interact with medications, you should take them only under the supervision of a knowledgeable health care provider. Side effects are generally mild. High doses (5 or more grams per day) may cause diarrhea. Other rare side effects include increased appetite, body odor, and rash. People with the following conditions should talk to their provider before taking carnitine: Peripheral vascular disease. High blood pressure. Liver disease from alcoholism (cirrhosis)Diabetes. Kidney disease. History of seizures Possible Interactions. If you are being treated with any of the following medications, you should not use carnitine without first talking to your health care provider. AZT: In a laboratory study, L- carnitine supplements protected muscle tissue against toxic side effects from AZT, a medication used to treat HIV and AIDS. More studies are needed to know whether L- carnitine would have the same effect in people. Doxorubicin: Treatment with L- carnitine may protect heart cells against the toxic side effects of doxorubicin, a chemotherapy medication used to treat cancer, without making the medication any less effective. Always talk to your oncologist before using complementary or alternative (CAM) therapies with chemotherapy. Isotretinoin (Accutane): Accutane, a strong medication used for severe acne, can cause liver problems, as measured by a blood test, as well as high cholesterol, and muscle pain and weakness. These symptoms are like those seen with carnitine deficiency. Researchers in Greece showed that a large group of people who had side effects from Accutane got better when taking L- carnitine compared to those who took a placebo. Thyroid hormone: Carnitine may stop thyroid hormone from getting into cells, and theoretically may make thyroid hormone replacement less effective. If you take thyroid replacement hormone, talk to your provider before taking carnitine. Valproic acid (Depakote): The antiseizure medication valproic acid may lower blood levels of carnitine. Taking L- carnitine supplements may prevent any deficiency and may also reduce the side effects of valproic acid. However, taking carnitine may increase the risk of seizures in people with a history of seizures. Blood Thinning Medications: Carnitine may increase the risk of bleeding in people taking blood thinning medicaitons. Supporting Research. Benvenga S, Ruggieri RM, Russo A, Lapa D, Campenni A, Trimarchi F. Usefulness of L- carnitine, a naturally occurring peripheral antagonist of thyroid hormone action, in iatrogenic hyperthyroidism: a randomized, double- blind placebo- controlled clinical trial. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. Does it Work for Weight Loss? Written by C. Fookes. What is Garcinia cambogia? Garcinia cambogia is an extract obtained from the dried fruit of the Garcinia cambogia (GC) tree, a native plant species of South India and South Asia. The fruit looks like a small green pumpkin, and is used extensively in Asian- style cooking for its sour flavor. What is the active ingredient and how does it work? The skin, or rind of Garcinia cambogia fruit contains large amounts of hydroxycitric acid (HCA). HCA is a derivative of citric acid, and is marketed as a weight loss supplement, either alone or in combination with other supplements. How HCA works to promote weight loss is not precisely known, but several theories exist. Some experts believe it works by inhibiting an enzyme called citrate lyase, interfering with the conversion of unused carbohydrates into fat. Although HCA does have this effect on carbohydrates in a laboratory petri dish, it is unproven whether it does this once inside the body. Other experts suggest HCA affects other enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism, such as pancreatic alpha amylase and intestinal alpha glucosidase. A few postulate that it increases the release or availability of serotonin in the brain, promoting appetite suppression. Nobody knows for sure just how HCA works. Some of these trials are of better quality than others, and reviews that group trials together to look for an overall effect give us a better “bigger picture” than just looking at the results of a single trial. An analysis in 2. Onakpoya et al. 1 found 1. Garcinia cambogia for weight loss that matched their strict quality criteria. Although they found evidence that Garcinia cambogia did promote weight loss in the short term, the effect was small and barely significant. The same conclusion was reached in another review by Fassina et al. Interestingly, in one of the largest individual trials of 1. GC) and the control group (the group taking a placebo – or an inactive supplement) lost a significant amount of weight over a 1. As many other previous trials have suggested, it is often the support and encouragement people receive to lose weight that makes more of a difference than any diet or supplement. In summary, evidence so far does not suggest Garcinia cambogia is effective as a weight loss supplement; although larger scale trails conducted over a longer period of time may shed more light on the subject. For now, increasing physical activity levels, avoiding alcohol, and eating a healthier diet with more vegetables, whole grains, and less red meat is more likely to make you shed weight long- term than Garcinia cambogia supplements. Is there any harm in taking Garcinia cambogia supplements? It is important to remember that ANY product labeled as “natural” or “herbal” is not unquestionably safe. Herbal remedies classified as dietary supplements in the United States are regulated as food products. This means they have not been subjected to the same requirements for safety or efficacy as medicines. Garcinia cambogia has been implicated in causing liver damage, both when used in combination with other ingredients (for example, in the original formulation of the product Hydroxycut) and when used by itself. Two severe cases are documented. The first was a 5. Garcinia cambogia for 1. GC. 4 The second lady recovered without incident several days after Garcinia cambogia was discontinued. Interestingly, the manufacturer of Hydroxycut temporarily withdrew the product, but it has since returned a reformulated version that lacks Garcinia cambogia to the market. Other reported adverse effects are generally mild when Garcinia cambogia is taken at the recommended dosage and include stomach upset, dry mouth, headaches, dizziness, and diarrhea. Herbal remedies should not be taken by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and anybody with heart disease or other medical conditions should consult their doctor before use. Some studies have suggested that Garcinia cambogia can lower blood sugar or interfere with diabetes control, so it is particularly important if you have diabetes that you talk with your doctor. On the positive side, unlike stimulants such as phentermine, Garcinia cambogia does not act on the central nervous system, so does not cause sleeplessness, anxiety, affect the heart or blood pressure, and its efficiency does not decrease with time. Does Garcinia cambogia have any effect on blood sugars? There have been several contradictory claims about the effects Garcinia cambogia has on blood glucose control with some celebrity endorsements even suggesting it may be beneficial for people with diabetes. While studies in rats have shown a reduction in the amount of glucose absorbed and less of a spike in blood glucose levels following a meal, rats are not humans so studies were needed to determine if this also applied to humans. Thazhath et al. 8 took 1. Garcinia cambogia) plus glucose to water plus glucose in a cross- over type trial. Although some reduction in blood sugar levels were seen in healthy people, there was no reduction in the blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. Other markers, such as insulin response, were not affected. Other human studies have also failed to support use of Garcinia cambogia for blood sugar control. Yonei et al. 9 tested the effects of daily supplementation with Garcinia cambogia extract (5. L- carnitine (6. 00 mg/day) on 3. BMI of 2. 4 or higher. After 8 weeks’ supplementation, the group receiving Garcinia cambogia had an increase of 4. Hb. A1c (provides a reflection of long- term glucose control). Conversely, a 2. 00. LDL- cholesterol when Garcinia cambogia extract was combined with Amorphophallus konjac (also known for its weight loss properties). However, no effect was seen on triglyceride or glucose levels. Generally speaking, most trials. Garcinia cambogia to have an effect on blood sugars or insulin control; one trial reported a lowering in healthy non- diabetic subjects while another reported an increase in fasting blood sugar levels in overweight individuals. Even though laboratory studies on human cells and animal studies suggested Garcinia cambogia reduced cell synthesis of lipids and increased degradation of cholesterol, human trials have been contradictory. No effects on triglycerides have been reported. Based on the evidence available, Garcinia cambogia is unlikely to have an effect on blood glucose or cholesterol levels, and does not appear beneficial for people with diabetes. Does Garcinia cambogia interact with any medications? Garcinia cambogia may interact with the following: Diabetes medications, including insulin – variable effects reported, always consult a doctor before use if you have diabetes. Other possible, but unsubstantiated, interactions include: Iron supplements – several informative sites state Garcinia cambogia contains iron. Garcinia cambogia, which is unlikely to contain high amounts of iron. Several other fruits (such as prunes, persimmons, and passion fruit) also contain iron but are not reported as interacting with iron supplements. Serotonin- stimulating antidepressants (such as Celexa, Paxil, Zoloft) or pain medications (such as tramadol) – one mouse study. Garcinia cambogia had a serotonin- enhancing effect; however, this has not been verified in humans. Asthma medications (including montelukast) – one documented case study. Garcinia cambogia) for two weeks on top of her usual asthma medications, including montelukast. Statins – this is based on the fact that statins can cause rhabdomyolysis (a destruction of muscle cells). One case study. 18 reported rhabdomyolosis in a women taking a combination weight loss supplement (of which one of the ingredients was garcinia cambogia); so some experts are concerned about a theorectical additive effect with statins (she was not taking a statin at the time)Warfarin – A man taking warfarin together with a combination herbal product that included Garcinia cambogia, reported a change in his INR (a measure of the clotting ability of the blood) that returned to normal after discontinuation of the supplement. In addition, supplements of Garcinia cambogia may contain other nutrients such as calcium and potassium which may cause additive effects in people already supplementing their diet with these nutrients. Always read the label to see what ingredients are actually contained in your supplement, and always seek your doctor’s advice before taking any dietary supplements particularly if you take other medications. A member of the Ephedracae family of herbs (Ephedra sinica ), ephedra is native to northern China and Inner Mongolia where it thrives in desert areas as a jointed, barkless plant with branches that bear few leaves and tiny yellow- green flowers that bloom in summer. While varieties of ephedra grow throughout the world, the United States version flourishes in the dry southwest. Ephedra became popular to Mormon settlers in the early 1. Mormon Tea. Other folk names that have resulted over time include Desert Tea, Desert Herb, and Squaw Tea. The herbal drink was named Whorehouse Tea after it was served in brothels during the 1. The medicinal herb Ma Huang is made of the dried, young branchlets of ephedra. Harvested in the autumn, ephedra is reproduced from seed or by root division and the stems are dried in the sun throughout the year for production. The herb should be stored away from light. Ephedra gains its strength primarily from the alkaloid ephedrine, pseudephedrine, and norpseudephedrine. These active ingredients produce central nervous system stimulation. Other key components of ephedra include: tannin, an acidic substance found in the barksaponin, originating in the rootsflavone, the chemical from which natural colors of many plants originatevolatile oil. General use. A bitter- tasting herb that has been relied upon by the Chinese throughout centuries to heal ailments from fevers and chills , to nasal and chest congestion, ephedra also maintains its prominence as a strong stimulant. Contrary to its reputation, Zen monks used the herb to promote calm concentration during meditation . However, larger amounts can make a person jittery. Today, ephedra is used in the United States as an herbal medicine to treat asthma and hay fever , and the beginningsof colds and flu. The herb is also used to raise blood pressure, cool fevers, and ease the pain of rheumatism. While ephedrine was used in various decongestant and bronchodilator products in the United States beginning in the late 1. Scientists created the equally effective, but safer, pseudephedrine that remains the active ingredient in many over- the- counter (OTC) products such as Sudafed. Primatene Mist, an OTC that contains ephedrine, is used regularly to treat asthma. The body responds to ephedra as one of its key ingredients, ephedrine, opens bronchial passages, activating the heart and raising blood pressure while increasing metabolism. Due to its stimulating effect on the nervous system, many weight loss and energy products contain ephedra. Ephedrine increases basal metabolic rate (BMR), causing the body to burn calories faster. Dieters use ephedra- based products because they suppress the appetite and stimulate metabolism. ![]() While these diet products prove to be effective, their results are rarely permanent, and long- term use can be quite harmful. Chinese sources only recommended its use for acute situations. As an . The use of ephedra in this way dates back to bodyguards of Genghis Khan, who, legend has it, fearful of being beheaded if they fell asleep on duty, consumed tea containing ephedra to stay alert. Caffeine products, such as coffee, tea, chocolate, and cola drinks, enhance the effect of energy products containing ephedra. Additional medicinal uses of ephedra include the promotion of menstruation , the decreased desire for cigarettes, and the promotion of uterine contractions. Ma Huang is also known for its ability to increase sexual sensation. Some controversy surrounds the extended use of ephedra. In 1. 99. 4, the regulation of herbal medicine- type products in the United States changed with the passage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). At this time, herbal products were reclassified, along with vitamins and minerals, as dietary supplements. In March 1. 99. 9, the placement of a . In January 2. 00. The United States Pharmacopeial Convention announced it would launch a dietary supplement verification program. Though voluntary, the program would allow supplement manufacturers to provide documentation that they had a quality standard system in place, the organization would audit that system, then verify the quality of the supplement as long as the manufacturer continued to meet the criteria. While questions surround the correct use of ephedra in the United States, the German government's Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (Commission E) certifies that ephedra herba, ephedra, and Ma Huang is an approved remedy for diseases of the respiratory tract with mild bronchospasms. ![]() ![]() Approval from Commission E, however, is not equivalent to the FDA's higher standards of drug approval. Ephedra is available over the counter as a fluid extract, in tablet form, or as a dried bulk herb at Chinese pharmacies, Asian markets, and health food stores where it is permitted throughout the United States. When purchasing the herb, be certain to avoid those that look dry or have a greenish- brown cross section. Chinese herbalists prepare ephedra for use by combining one part honey, four parts dried herb in combination with other herbs, and a small amount of water in a wok. The herbs are simmered over low heat until the water has evaporated and the herb begins to turn brown. Other forms of preparation include frying ephedra in vinegar or wine to improve its tonic effect on blood circulation, and toasting it to an ash so that it may increase its ability to stop bleeding. To treat fever and chills, Chinese herbalists recommend combining ephedra with cinnamon twig and other herbs. Coughing and wheezing are remedied with a mixture of ephedra and apricot seed , while licorice is added to the herb for stomachaches . An upper respiratory infection, or congestion, is treated with a combination of ephedra and ginger . The powder form, mixed with rehmannia, is also used by the Chinese to treat kidney energy (yin) deficiency.
